An overview of finish treatment requirements for processing fibers into nonwoven fabrics addresses fiber friction, methods for evaluating fiber friction and static charge generation, finish treatments required for carding and needle punching processes, and the ineffectiveness of conventional methods for evaluating finish performance. Lubricant, viscosity, and cohesive agent type affect fiber frictional properties. Common friction measurement methods include hydrodynamic friction, point contact, line contact, Sirkoski friction, pin drafting force, and static charge generation methods. Fiber to fiber friction determines interfiber cohesion in needle punched fabrics, and optimal fiber to metal friction enables the needles to slide through the web and grab the fibers with the needle barbs. 36 refs.
