Naturally colored brown and green cotton fibers can be used in the manufacture of needle punched nonwoven fabric blankets despite their short length and low strength with the addition of low melt polymers. A study evaluated blankets manufactured under different heat treatment conditions for such fiber and fabric properties as weight, thickness, strength, stiffness, air permeability, thermal properties, and flammability. Hoechst Celanese's Celbond 254 and 255 bicomponent fibers improved properties, whereas Foss Fibre 410 did not. The green cotton blankets had the softest hand, retaining flexibility and had after treatment. Brown cotton blankets derived the most benefit from the polymer additives and provided better insulation and flammability properties. 18 refs.
