A study to improve the strength of nonwoven geotextiles manufactured from staple fibers developed a frictional device that spreads filaments on a web to form a staple/filament/staple structure. An experiment evaluated the effects of different needle intensities and filament contents on the grab and tear strength of a nonwoven composite featuring spread filaments enclosed within two preneedle punched webs that were punched again to yield a nonwoven composite. Reinforcing filaments increased composite strength by a factor of two to seven. The friction device increased composite strength further by distributing the filaments more evenly, allowing them to interlock with the nonwoven webs. Optimal needle density was 300 needles per square centimeter.
