Researchers examined the effects of different processes used in the manufacture of nonwoven fabrics on the size and position of capillaries within the fabrics. A network of capillaries that communicated with each other characterized nonwoven fabrics. Experiments used needle punching and heat treatment to manufacture the nonwoven fabric samples. An increase in needle punching density decreased capillary diameter. Heat treatment decreased capillary diameter to 100-130 microns and created closed capillaries inaccessible to filling with sorbate. Experiments determined the optimal applications for fabrics depending on process conditions. 4 refs.
