Fast Evaluation of Average Fiber Diameters of Nonwovens.

Researchers compared the results of the gas permeability method, the envelope surface area method, and gas adsorption surface area method to determine which provides the most accurate measurement of average fiber diameters . Porous Materials Incorporated's Average Fiber Diameter Analyzer measured the average fiber diameter of fibrous webs with porosities of 0.74-0.79. The Envelope Surface Area Analyzer calculated the average diameter of fiber samples from the measured flow rates, pressure drops, and an equation that accounted for volume and true density of the fibers. The QBET gas adsorption device estimated average fiber diameters within 10 percent of actual measurements. 5 refs
