Markets for air laid fabrics include feminine hygiene products (21 percent), dry wipes (21 percent), wet wipes (20 percent), tabletop (15 percent), diapers (5 percent), medical textiles (5 percent), and miscellaneous (13 percent). Advantages of air laid fabrics for consumer, cleaning, and industrial wipes include excellent scrubbing ability, strength, softness, thickness, and embossability. Wet wipes based on air laid fabrics, preferred by North American consumers, perform better than wet laid hydroentangled products and are compatible with antibacterial solutions, lotion, makeup removers, sunscreen additives, hydrocortisone, and other topical treatments. Dry wipes manufactured from air laid fabrics are compatible with antimicrobial agents. The continued success of air laid fabrics in the wiping products industry will depend on continued niche development, improving current features, matching features of other technologies at lower costs, and narrowing the differences between dry and wet wipes.
