Production cost advantages and widening nonwovens end-use applications have contributed to 10% annual growth over 20 years in nonwovens. A recent research program at the International Textile Center is reported. The development of protective fabrics against hazardous agents is the objective. A Fehrer II technology needle loom and a William Tatham feeding line are being used and the principal advantages are listed (four). The structure of the micro feed unit is illustrated. Cost is a major issue in the use of cotton for speciality nonwovens applications such as the medical sector. H1 technology higher throughput can reduce costs, with less needling required compared with conventional looms. Cleaning and feeding requirements are covered. Structural features of nonwovens webs are improved by the unique design of the needle zone. This is judged the best technology for composite needleweb development for use in protective clothing substrates and shields.
