The European market for nonwovens and technical textiles is growing and in a healthy position. Customer demand for specific solutions to problems is leading technological innovation rather than responding to new technologies and creating end uses. Annual growth of 9% pa is exceeding previous forecasts with automotive demand strong through industry recovery and more rapid growth in airbag use. Production trends are listed with fabrics made in low cost countries, increased mergers/acquisitions, increased exports and new entrants to the technical textile industry. Signs of maturity in the industry are listed and the trend to market-pull rather than technology push is evident. The difference this makes is explained with endues customers dictating increasingly demanding targets and the balance of power moving to suppliers able to integrate several technologies for specified end products. The effect this situation has on profits is discussed. A suggested action plan for companies is summarized.
