An in depth comparison is made with the aid of tables between hydraulically entangled nonwovens and needled nonwovens, with regard to the economic aspects, fabric characteristics and processing conditions. The properties of hydraulically entangled products make them ideal for the rapidly expanding hygiene and medical sectors, where their haptic characteristics, drape, absorption capacity, softness and good fibre anchoring in the surface are particularly important. On the other hand, needling is one of the most successful techniques used for banding nonwoven webs, and offers stable growth prospects. Development work an increasing the productivity of needling machines based on stable fibre processing and the needling of spunbandeds will hopefully open up new prospects for high-volume markets. Hydraulic entanglement can be regarded as being more of a specialized process, while needling tends to be more universal.
