Technological measures for levelling the fabric weight profile in the transverse direction have contributed substantial1y to reducing web irregularity. These alone are, however, insufficient to achieve optimum levelling. Longitudina1 profile uniformity maintained by the use of "Hyperpunch" in the needling process is necessary. Web weight variations are discussed. Dimensional changes in needling machines are then covered, examining longitudinal stretch and width contraction. The damaging effects of longitudinal stretch are further considered. Drafting units are explored, with a typical unit having four drafting zones, each providing a quarter of the total stretch factor relative to speed increase. Profiling is then discussed, quoting the French NSC Nonwovens Systems "Pro-Dyn" Process Which is explained. Needling kinematics and Hyperpunch are described. with subsequent effects. The effect of stretch on material weight profile is covered, and there is a concluding summary of material weight variation and fibre consumption. (4 fig).
