Illustrated with colour photographs of a catwalk display and individual garments, this is an account of a fashion show that featured only nonwoven materials. Sponsored by Rieter Perfojet, with the concept “nonwovens as fashion items”, a team of designers took up the challenge, led by two experienced designers. No restrictions were placed on the designers, and technological help from Rieter engineers was available. A request from the design team for very lightweight (9g/㎡) fabrics in pale shades with a silk-like texture was met by the engineers. The fabrics used in the show were produced using water jet bonding techniques, a process that retains natural fibre qualities and can produce softness and drape characteristics in the finished cloth. The raw materials used in the fabrics were bends of cotton and man-made fibre. The show was a big success and experts attending were said to be amazed at the potential of the “new” materials.
