Nonwovens are here defined as fabric-like materials made of fibres that are not spun but merely joined together in a number of ways. The technology is seen as new, innovative and efficient and this view is supported by a graph that shows production growth of these materials rising from less than 300,000 tones in 1985 to more than 1 million tones in 1999. The graph also indicates growth in four different types of nonwoven; drylaid, wetlaid, spunlaid and others. The text refers to a conference at Hof where some 18 papers were read dealing with technical and product innovations. New markets are now being found for nonwovens outside of traditional industries such as building, automotive and agriculture. The medical textile market is one such area considered. A range of new nonwoven products are aimed at other industrial sectors of the market while cooperation between companies can have beneficial effects on declining sectors of the textile industry.
