The latest devices from U. Engineering, Osaka, Japan, which will be exhibited at CMM International 2003 (Chicago-April 2003) and ITMA 2003 (Birmingham, UK-October 2003), are reviewed. The two principal machines will be a web-guiding and wrinkle-removing device, the Caroliner, to be used with converting machinery, and high-speed wrinkle removing rolls, the Flat Expander and the Miravo Roll. Two conventional web-guiding machines, the widthwise separation type and the full-width type, each have disadvantages which are explained. The Caroliner has been designed to overcome these difficulties and can cope with wovens, nonwovens, film, paper and glass fibers. The method of wrinkle removal (web expansion ) is descried. The web-guiding mechanism is also examined in detail. With higher production speeds demanded all the time, it is essential that production lines are designed to minimize wrinkles. Both Asahi Kasei and Unitika have acquired the newly developed, high-speed Flat Expander for their new high-speed operations.
