Wintriss Engineering Corporation's fourth generation Optical Web Inspection system employs sensor-like video imaging devices and specialized image processing hard- ware and software to detect surface defects on nonwoven fabrics. The sensor consists of a one dimensional array of 1,000-10,000 light sensitive pixels. Combining the images
generates a high resolution two dimensional image. Image filtering tests indicate that simple thresholding is ineffective for porous materials, two dimensional average filtering removes high frequency noise from images, and the size and aspect ratio of the two dimensional filter determine the type of defect to be imaged. Using multiple filters might improve the accuracy of real time fabric uniformity values. 5 refs.
