Researchers compared the efficiency of such image analysis methods as chord tracking, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, flow field analysis, and optical Fourier transform analyisis for characterizing fiber orientation in nonwoven fabrics weighing up to 500 grams per square meter. The image analysis system consisted of various digital imaging devices, a CCD camera, and an optical scanner. A novel lighting system provided directional and diffuse transmission sample illumination. Directional illumination improved the quality of digital images by increasing the contrast between individual fibers and the sample background. Monochromic light emitting diodes were superior to previously investigated light sources. Indirect analytical methods generated the most reliable data on orientation direction function. 21 refs.
