Total hosiery production in the second quarter of 1993 exceeded 100 million dozen, a 4.8 percent increase over the same period a year ago. Sock production reached nearly 57.3 million dozen, a 6.1 percent increase over the last year. Women's socks production increase over the last year. Women's socks production increased 4.6 percent to 14 million dozen. Boy's socks decreased, however, 9.8 percent to 5.7 million dozen. Men's socks increased 19.7 percent to 24.7 million dozen. Gains of more than 21 percent in the athletic sock category fueled the increase. Women's sheer hosiery increased 3.2 percent to 42 million dozen. In other developments in the hosiery industry, Artex held an open house in its new building in Charlotte, North Carolina, to introduce additions to its Sangiacomo line of men's hosiery machines and women's pantyhose machines, and Sara Lee entered a pact with Softouch Company to advertise, manufacture, and distribute women's pantyhose, opaques, nonexercise tights, and nylon knee high socks.
