Technical Development Aspects of Barrier Textiles.

Barrier textiles are frequently used in the manufacture of personal protective equipment and apparel. The function of these textiles is to provide a barrier between the against particles and fluids. In designing personal protective equipment and apparel with barrier textiles, it is critical to consider not only the performance of the textile itself, but its performance as a functioning component of the system. Comfort is frequently a problem because these systems are generally sealed, trapping heat and moisture. Air and moisture permeable barrier textiles are commercially available, but only air permeable fabrics are in wide use. In protecting against particles, the textiles only provide temporary protection because of the limited reservoir capacity of the fabric.
