One Stage Degumming and Bleaching of Silk Using Peroxide in the Presence of Urea.

For one stage degumming and bleaching of silk with peroxide, a pH between 4 and 8 enhances the action of urea. At pH 10, the effect of urea on decomposition of hydrogen peroxide is less significant. At a pH less than 10, the efficiency of degumming decreases. One stage silk degumming and bleaching using peroxide in the presence of urea leads to an improvement in degumming and bleaching, but the weight loss is less than that obtained using a combined two bath process.
