A Stanford University study is using computer driven lasers to map the breasts of hundreds of female volunteers in an effort to develop a range of average or typical breast sizes and shapes. Previous studies, using plaster casts and manual calculations, yielded no reliable data. Scanning techniques for the study were developed by Cyberware of Monterey, California, which used similar technology to create computer generated creatures in such Hollywood films as Terminator 2. The study's originator, Dr. Loren Eskenazi, foresees a day when the data can be sold to brassiere manufacturers to improve fit.
