A yellow, tan, or brown stain can appear on a garment subsequent to cleaning and pressing, or after a period of storage. These stains are caused when the garment comes into contact with a food or beverage containing tannins or sugar. When the moisture from the food or beverage evaporates, it leaves an invisible residue. The stains later emerge when the residue becomes oxidized either through the heat of deodorizing or finishing, or as a result of storage. To avoid the problem, any stain should be thoroughly flushed with water at the time it first occurs. Once oxidization has taken place, it is uaually impossible to remove the stain from silk, wool, and some nylon garments. Extensive specialized spotting agents may lighten the stain in some garments, possibly enough to make the garment wearable.
