Each year, about 45,000 demaged garments are sent to the International Fabricare Institute(IFI) from drycleaners, launderers, Better Business Bureaus, and consumer protection agencies. IFI summarizes the various types of garment damage to identify patterns in particular problem areas and to provide information to drycleaners, manufacturers, and consumers regariding the causes of damage and the assignment of responsibility for the damage. Shrinkage is often among the top five complaints annualiy. A series of nine charts, graphs, and tables illustrates important information concerning garment shrinkage during drycleaving. The use of the proper solvent relative humidity is a key factor in preventing shrinkage problems in cotton. Lowering the moisture regain and solvent relative humidity can miminize wool shrinkage. For acrylic knit fabrics, moisture regain and shrinkage are inversely proportional.
