This survey investigates the problem of implementing a practical 3-D modeling for pattern design for the apparel industry, describing a series of defferent approaches which have been used in the past. However, patterns are useful only when ease and opening are included. All models and approaches described are based on the steric fit of the human body, and some methods may fail when a suitable amount of ease is taken into account. Subsequent to the development of high-powered computing devices, the authors believe that CAD software can be used to generate a computer image of the mannequin on a variational basis, allow the pattern designer to design patterns both in 3-D and 2-D form, handle commonly used styling features (pleats, fastening devices), realistically represent how the style should look on the manniquin, and generate the required pattern.
