The effect of fabric behaviour and properties on pattems and processability is explored. For example, when one pattem is for three summer weight fabrics, the problems found during making-up, and also with the resulaant garments, are found to differ in each case. FAST instumentation is used to inject a degree of objective measurement into the tests, which are applied to polyester, cotton/polyester and linen fabrics. It is thought that future automation and robotization of apparel manufacturing will require machines and systems to be based on the specific properties of the fabrics being selected.
