Engineers at the Clemson Apparel Research Facility improved the design of the Clupicker, an auxiliary device that separates and picks up individual plies of abric during ewing, after extensive systems analyses. The redesign reduced the total number of parts from 80 to 39, decreasing assembly time by 50 percent. Field tests of a prototype, which involved a range of military grade fabrics, revealed an efficiency rate in excess of 99.9 percent over 1,800 picks. After completing the successful field tests, the engineers sent the redesigned Clupicker to the Jet Sew company for a series of adjustments prior to commercial release. Currently, the Jet Sew 3002 incorporates the Clupicker automatic feeder.
