Engineers at the clemson Apparel Research Facility designed and fabricated two experimental pressing mechanisms for the folding and fixing of woven fabric during the manufacture of collar bancs for dress shirts and blouses. The first device employed superheated steam and the second device employed conductive heating and cooling. During testing, a comparison of fold performance and cycle times showed that the first device was best suited for cotton based fabrics and the second device was best suited for polyester based fabrics. The cycle times of the first device ranged from 22 seconds for pure cotton fabric to 56 seconds for 70/30 cotton/polyester blends. The cycle times of the second device ranged from 15 seconds for pure polyester fabric to 80 seconds for pure cotton fabric.
