Active Sportswear Market in Japan.

Major Japanese sportswear manufacturers have been reporting significant declinis in recent sales. Golf and ski apparel sales have declined dramatically. Soccer and other outdoor sports apparel sales have been extremely vigorous, however. Sales of golf apparel and related goods decreased 12.2 percent in the first half of 1993. In the soccer and related goods market, Mizuno posted double digit increases, Glodwin and Descente registered sales increases of 71 percent, Asics posted an 80 percent increaes in sales, and Zett had a 67 percent increase in sales. Regarding profits, Mizuno posted a loss of 600 million yen, Asics'profit fell 1.7 percent, and Zett's profit dropped 0.6 percent. Goldwin's profits rose a modest 0.1 percent.
