Shimpments of fibers and yarns to the carpet industry increased 5 percent in 1993. Ninety percent of all the nylon 6 and nylon 66 fibers manufactured in the United States are made by Du Pont, Monsanto, AlliedSignal, and BASF. Du Pont manufactured 1.3 billion pounds of nylon 6 fibers in 1993. Monsanto manufactures 560 million pounds of nylon 6 annually. About 75 percent of total nylon 6 production goes into catpet fibers, and about 75 percent of that total goes into residential carpets. If the proposed merger between AllieSignal and BASF is approved by the Federal Trade Commission, the new company would be the second largest nylon fiber producer in the United States, behind Du Pont. The commercial canpet market is currently 75 percent renovation and replacements carpets and 25 prcent new building carpets. In commercial floor coverings, 74 prcent of all business is in carpets, 17 precent in resilient floor coverings, 8 percent in ceramic tile, and 1 percent in wood.
