An experiment characterized the effects of various organic solvents used in commercila drycleaning on silk yarn and fabric. Results showed that silk yarns swelled when immersed in water, tetrachloroethylene, or mineral spirits. During the drying process the yarns tended to shrink in overall length. Silk yarns that were immersed in trichlorofluoroethane tended to shrink during drying, but returned to their original length. The effect of the solvents on changes in yarn length ranked as follow: water > tetrachloroethylene > mineral sprits > trichlorofluoroethane. The solvents had little effect on hand values (as measured by the HESC evaluation system), with the least change displayed by silk fabric samples that were immersed in mineral spirits without mechanical agitation. The researchers concluded that solvents based on mineral spirits were best suited for the drycleaning of silk fabric. 12 refs.
