Testing is critical to ensure product quality, but costs limit the number of tests that can be performed. Organizations throughout the world develop, evaluate, and/or standardize quality control testing. Increasingly, these organizations specify tolerance limits as well, particularly for properties related to safety. However, buyers and sellers can reach a mutual ageement on tolerance limits that are not mandated by law. Many properties fall in a gray area, complicated by a range of factors, even such subjective factors as consumer attitudes. Garment size is one such property. Standardization is controversial because body types vary widely even within countries, particularly heterogeneous countries like the United States. Consumers also respond subjectively to sizes, as if they were a kind of judgment on their bodies. This attitude leads to purchasing the wrong size regardless of whether the garment fits.
