Protective clothing is always appropriate for the removal, encapsulation and enclosure of asbestos, and often a requirement for operations and maintenance activities. To completely understand the worker's protective clothing needs, everyone involved in an abatement project should be familiar with an asbetos work environment, the types of clothing available and what government resources exist for extra reference. There are two types of protective clothing worn in asbestos-abatement projects: disposable and nondisposable. Disposable clothing materials include spun-boeded polyethylene (breathable) and polypropylene. However, contaminated disposable clothing must be discarded in an approved landfill. Nondisposable clothing is common in continental Europe and Scandinavia and includes expanded PTFE, nylon/cotton blends and polyester/cotton blends. Expanded PTFE is the only truly water-resistant and breathable fabric, but is also the most expensive. Also the costs associated with industria laundering must be considered. The selection of gloves, footwear, protective eyewear and head protection have also to be considered. The OSHA standard requires that everyone must decontaminate before leaving the work area.
