Sources report that Fruit of the Loom is close to agreeing to purchase Calvin Klein's jeans division for $50 million. Calvin Klein had signed a letter of intent to sell the division to Rio Sprotswear for $35 million, but when that letter expired on March 27, 1994, and the deal still had not been finalized, Calvin Klein began considering other bids. In pursuing the sale to Fruit of the Loom, Calvin Klein is acting on the advise of David Geffen, who is also seeking buyers for the company's CK women's sportswear division. Geffen recommended the sale to Fruit of the Loom, even though that company did not offer the highest bid, because it promised to spend heavily on advertising and has a respected brand name. Both sales effots are part of Calvin Klein's strategy of selling all of its manufacturing businesses to concentrate on design and licensing.
