Sluggish domestic demand for cotton has forced Japanese apparel manufacturers to scale down their operations to compete with increasingly competitive companies from Asian countries. To remain competitive, Japanese manufacturers have shifted rom being quantity conscious to being quality conscious. Major developments include the use of processes that minimized pollution, and the use of materials and processes that are not harmful to the skin, such as nonformalin finishes, dyeing with natural dyes, ultraviolet preventing finishes, and antiacterial and deodorant finishes. Durable press men's shrits became the most popular value added apparel product manufactured by Japanese apparel companies in 1993-1994. Most shirts were made of polyester and cotton blend fabrics. The use of a durable press finish on 100 percent cotton fabrics and knitwear is being developed. Unique combinations of fibers, such as denim made with cotton and rayon, are also being used.
