A major problem in jeans manufacture is a defect known as twisted leg, which makes the jeans unwearable. Various factor contribute to twisted leg. First, the denim manufacturer may not have designed the fabric with optimal antiskew to prevent twisting. Second, the fabric geometry may be inconsistent across its width, particularly relative to the angle of twill. Third, the side seam may not have been sewn optimally because denim is difficult to sew and the operation itself requires a high level of skill. Controlling skew in denim has its linitations. Distortion, however, must be less than 3 percent to prevent twisting. Jeans manufacturers should test skew prior to sewing. Levi Strauss has performed extensive research on the problem of fabric geometry and concluded that it is critical to distribute the skew evenly across the width of the fabric and that the front and back panels of one pair of jeans cannot be placed in the same outer quadrant of the marker.
