The extraordinarily bad weather the United States during this past winter led to explosive sales in coats. In luxury coats, cashmere and camel hair performed particularly well, followed by wool/angora blends and alpaca. Large inventories and low prices for cashmere fueled the sales. The most popular style was the ankle length coat in wide variety of silhouettes. Major advantages of cashmere in winter coats is its soft hand, light weiht, durability, and excellent insulation. Predicted shortages of cashmere from China in 1994 will probably raise prices, but not affect demand. Armicale Industries of New York is the largest producer in the United States of cashmere and camel hair fabrics used in coats.
