Sodium hypochlorite is an oxidizing bleach used during the processing of cellulosic fabrics. A reaction between potassium permanganate an hydrochloric acid, which involves the liberation of chlorine, is suitable for the in-house preparation of sodium hypochlorite. An alternative method prepares sodium hypochlorite. An alternative method prepares sodium hypochlorite directly by the electrolysis of sodium chloride saturated solution. This process is less hazardous than the potassium permanganate reaction, but high concentrations of hypochlorite solution can not be obtained. The concentration of the hypochlorite influences the dischargeability of color. The stability of the hypochlorite was poor at a low pH. 5 refs.
