An experiment investigated the effect of chlorinated water on the colorfastness of dyed nylon swimsuits. The dyes were C.I. Acid Orange 149, C.I. Acid Red 114, and C.I. Acid Blue 140. Measurements included gray scale contrasts, delta-E CIELAB values, residualactive chlorine concetnrations on the fabric, possible dye-chlorine interactions, and possible ibr-chlorine interactions. The colorfastness data were fitted to the JIS L 0884-1983 and UK-T-1983standards. Results indicated that nylon absorbed the active chlorine, which oxidized the dye and combined with the fiber to form chloramid. Active chlorine exerted a much more significant influence on the deterioration of swimsuit colorfastness than did other degradative effects, such as ultraviolet aging. 8 refs.
