Silk is highly sensitive to the heat, friciton, and alkainity of launering. Imporoper laundering adversely affearance and durability. The optlmal method for hand-laundering is described. Washwater is neutral an soft. A neutral soap is used; borax and ammonia can be used as water softener. The silk is then washed and rinsed in warm water. Acid aded to the rinse improves scroop and brightness. Protection from the sun is required during air drying. A warm iron and light pressure are used during ironing. If the silk is not colorfast, then it must ge drycleaned. Special precautions for knits, georgette, crepe-de-Chine, chiffon, and velvet are noted.
