Atmospheric gases, such as nitrogen oxide, can cause color changes on many fabrics, especially on dyed acetate fabrics. The color change caused by nitrogen oxide gases is known as fume fading. These gases are produced by the combustion of heating gas range, automotive exhausts, and industrial exhausts. The color change usually occurs more intensely along the hemline or lower arease of a garment, and on both sides of the fabric. Color change is also more prominent in areas that were stained with water soluble materials. Heat during drying or finishing can accelerate this type of color change.
