Although drycleaners have used enzymes for spotting, enzymes have never been suitable as laundry additives in commercial laundry processes. Enzymes usually require special handling during use, which made them prohibitive for use in commercial laundry operations. This problem seems to have been overcome, however. Protease, amylase, lipase, and cellulase enzymes are currently used in detergents. The International Fabric Institute. (IFI) conducted a study to assess the viability of replacing a nonenzyme process with an enzyme process in a commercial laundry operation. The IFI study considered the degree of whiteness, yellowness, blood stain removal, soil removal, and chlorine bleach effectiveness for lipase and protease enzyme detergent processes and two nonenzyme detergent processes. The nonenzyme detergent processes outperformed the protease and lipase enzyme detergent processes in four out of five categories.
