Relaxation or stabilization of wool fabric is critical to the optimization of its dimensional stability and its mechanical behavior when subjected to stress. On a chemical level, relaxation involves breaking and reforming hydcrogen bonds and disulfide bonds in the protein molecule of wool. The major reaction in reforming these bonds is the disulfide interchagne. Treaction-elongation curves express the mechanical behavior of the fiber during this process. The two types of stabilization, which are controlled the reactions occurring int emolecular bonds, are permanent depends on the temperature, moisture, and the time under tension during relaxation. Shrinkage due to relaxation and hygroscopic elongation are critical factors in setting that control dimensional stability.
