Relation between the penetration force of a sewing needle into fabric and the basic mechanical properties of fabric

This study aims to investigate the effects of the basic mechanical properties on the penetration force of a sewing needle into various fabrics. The results show that when a sewing needle penetrates two layered fabrics, the penetration force is greatly affected by the penetration point of the needle. The specimens are either damaged by the needle or undamaged, and there is a great difference between the penetration force at these times. An equation between the undamaged and the damaged points is derived using the various properties of the fabrics, i.e. shearing, surface and air resistance related to fabric structure and weight per unit area. It is ascertained that the discriminate equation and the prediction equation of penetration force is extremely precise in adaptation for various fabrics.
