Pilling of Sweatshirts That Are a 50/50 Blend of Polyester and Cotton.

Researcher examined the pilling behavior of sweatshirts manufactured from a 50/50 blend of polyester and cotton, establishing a good correlation between pill ratings measured by the random tumble pill tester and wear performance. The front and back of the sweatshirt and the lower part of the sleeves were smapled for pilling during wear. The best correlation between the pill ratings and wear performance was for the front of the sweatshirt. Both pill resistant and nonpill resistant polyester were tested. The type of pill resistance has significant effect in the case of rotor spun yarns, but little, if any, effect in the case of air jet spun yarns. Sweatshirts manufactured from air jet spun yarns were up to tow units more pill resistant that those manufactured from rotor spun yarns. 8 refs.
