The performance of apparel fabrics depends on their functional, aesthetic, and comfort related properties. Functional properties include their processability during making-up. To control the performance of apparel fabrics, researchers have been developing methods for objective measurement since 1930. Currently, the most important methods are the Kawabata Evaluation System initiated by Kyoto University and the Textile Machinery Society of Japan in 1972 and CSIRO's Fabric Assurance by Simple Testing. These methods use instruments to measure all properties, even such properties as hand, which were conventionally measured by subjective evaluation. Computerization of the instruments has significantly facilitated the development of objective measurements. 11 refs.
