The development of chemical warfare agents and of protective clothing designed to provide a defence against them is reviewed. Modern agents can be classified as asphyxiants, irritants, vesicants, blood agents and nerve agents. The properties of the commonest chemical warfare agents are tabulated, including all those likely to be encountered by military personnel, waste cleanup crews and treaty inspectors.
