Textiles and clothing in Spain

The Spanish textile and clothing industry has expanded significantly since the 1970s. Sapin's accession to the EU in 1986 resulted in a period of rapid growth to 1990. During the 1990s, however, the economy has stagnated. Employment in textiles and clothing has dropped, and the number of insolvencies has increased. Spanish textile and clothing manufacturers are generally small or medium sized, family run businesses. Many are hampered by low levels of production technology, overemployment and a poor infrastructure for distribution. Several Spanish producers, however, have successfully expanded into retailing or established production centres in lower cost countries such as Portugal or Morocco.
