The need for import restrictions to protect the Japanese textile and apparel industry is discussed. Pressure on the part of industry bodies to try to persuade the Japanese government to implement the Multi-Fibre Arrangement (MFA) is increasing. MFA has already been signed by 51 member countries as an exception to GATT regulations. A table detailing apparel imports from major exporting countries is included.
