Researchers developed a computer aided design (CAD) system that permits consumers to interactively take part in apparel design. The CAD system employs a method of dynamic programming that relies on so-called 'genetic algorithms' to conduct database searches based on semantic differential values. During use, the CAD system generates design examples on a display monitor and the consumer grades them according to personal taste. Constant heuristic feedback ensures that the CAD system will rapidly gain an understanding of the consumer's aesthetic sensibility. 6 refs.
