The Lasernest is a laser based cutting machine developed by the German firm Logo Service/Humantec. The Lasernest, intended primarily for cutting leather for the furniture industry, receives shape information as input from computer aided design computer aided manufacturing systems used to calculate the shape of each piece. A single operator can lay out the material and then activate the laser cutter with a control keyboard that moves freely to ensure safety. Compared with manual cutting methods, the Lasernest achieves 75 percent savings in labor time. Because the material being cut is never moved after placement, the quality of the cut is excellent. Humantec is developing a variation of the Lasernest that will cut apparel fabrics with the same efficiency.
