Four commercial solvents-dibasic esters, isooctane, isopropyllactate and limonene - are found to perform better than perchloroethylene in some but not all respects, when tested for cleaning effectiveness, redeposition and shrinkage, on test fabrics of wool or polyester soiled with sebum/pigment or used engine oil. It is found that limonene is effective in the removal of engine oil, while isoprophyllactate is effective in removing sebum soil.
