Non-solvent wet cleaning process may be an alternative to dry cleaning

Faced with regulatory pressuresto reduce exposure to toxic chemicals, the dry cleaning industry is looking for alternative cleaning methods. As part of the EPA's Design for the Environment (DfE) effort, a short-term study was conducted to compare the cost and performance of an alternative wet cleaning process with traditional dry cleaning methods. Results of the study indicate that the wet cleaning process appears to be both economically competitive (compared to conventional dry cleaning) and acceptable to consumers, making it a viable alternative for some dry cleaners. The study further illustrates how a hands-on approach can be used to identify pollution prevention options.
